I am in two minds here...the ultimate indecisive Libra...
1) I think it is absolutely great that bands in SA is taking the plunge and diving into the South African music market. There isn't really alot of money in this industry and let's face: NOT everyone makes it big in the overseas market, but nevertheless, some SA bands still 'make it big!' locally. And local is lekker! What i love about SA bands, and especially bands that sing in my mother tongue, Afrikaans, is that they write and sing about stuff that I am familiar with. I think there is a niche market for SA bands, and i think that most South Africans need local music to help define who they are. Beside some of them really do have talent.
2) The other piece of my mind feels a bit like a hypocrite. I am supposed to blog about whether i think SA Bands suck or not, but frankly who am I to judge? I am not you, we don't like the same types of music, and furthermore I have never been in a band before so how can I criticize people that actually gave it a try? (ok- i must confess- i was a band MANAGER once...for three weeks....and then they broke up, which made me feel guilty but they assured me it wasn't me...i am over it now...)
ANYWAY...now that i said that, i can go on ripping them apart...cause i have to :0)
What annoys me about SA bands is the stupid names, the fact that EVERY second schoolboy strives to be the next f-offpolisiekar (jip that's right, i am one of those people that DOESN'T like the name...or the band), the fact that almost every second band falls under the punk-rock genre and lastly: their stupid stage personalities.
For Pete's sake....a name like 'Straatligkinders' or 'Foto na dans'...it is as if they are really trying hard to be weird and hopefully make it big because they have a weird name...what happened to singing talent?
And yes...the Nude Girls made it internationally...that doesn't turn your 4 man Garage Project into the next best thing...OK? Did you know (and no this isn't a chappies fact) that there IS OTHER genre's in this world other than punk-rock? Or is it maybe that this is only the easiest genre to start off with?
See that is the thing...there are a lot of very good bands out there...but to get to them, you first have to sift through a lot of crappy ones with annoying habits to find your favorite one...

I must agree, I have found since writing my blog on whether SA Bands suck some really nice bands! I have even found myself singing along to the songs. But you know how it is...its finding the good ones that takes time.
